The National Weather Service continued to track Tropical Depression Five-C’s northward approach toward the Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument on Sunday.
Five-C was expected to intensify into a tropical storm sometime between Sunday and Monday, but forecasters reiterated Sunday that it was unlikely to affect the major Hawaiian Islands.
At 5 p.m. Sunday, Five-C was about 180 miles south-southeast of Lisianski Island and about 200 miles southwest of Maro Reef, moving north at 14 mph with maximum sustained winds of 35 mph.
The storm is expected to increase in forward speed and gradually turn to the north-northwest by Monday night.
A tropical storm warning remains in effect for portions of the Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument, from French Frigate Shoals to Maro Reef and Lisianski Island. A tropical storm warning means that tropical storm conditions are expected within 36 hours.
A second system was approaching the state from the east Sunday, but the Central Pacific Hurricane Center said it had only a 10 percent chance of forming into a cyclone by Tuesday.
