1. Flag
» Situation: Hawaii 3, UC Davis 3, 10:14 remaining, second quarter, Hawaii ball, fourth-and-2 at own 35.
» The Play: UC Davis goes offside and instead of punting Hawaii gets a fresh set of downs.
» Impact: On the next play QB Max Wittek completed a 27-yard pass to WR Marcus Kemp and bounced off the hands of WR Makoa Camanse-Stevens. Five plays later, K Rigoberto Sanchez made a 46-yard field goal to give Hawaii a 6-3 lead. For the game, UC Davis was flagged for nine penalties for 93 yards and Hawaii got four first downs by penalty.
» UC Davis Coach Ron Gould: "It’s uncharacteristic of our team, I’m a little befuddled as it relates to that. With all these penalties we had tonight we couldn’t have the chance of any success."
2. Ewaliko and Stubblefield
» Situation: UC Davis 10, Hawaii 6, 0:56 remaining, second quarter, Hawaii ball, third-and-2 at UC Davis 14.
» The Play: Wittek completes a 14-yard pass to WR Devan Stubblefield for his first career touchdown. The score was set up by Keelan Ewaliko’s 65-yard kickoff return after a UC Davis touchdown.
» Impact: Hawaii got the lead it would not relinquish. In his first meaningful action, Stubblefield catches six passes for 108 yards.
» Stubblefield: "The whole entire offense worked together, and we moved the ball down the field, created first downs and we played together."
3. Breakaway
» Situation: Hawaii 13, UC Davis 10, 8:29 remaining, third quarter, Hawaii ball, second-and-7 at own 5.
» The Play: RB Paul Harris takes a handoff for a play designed to go inside. Seeing no opening, he cuts outside and after two key blocks at the line of scrimmage cuts upfield and runs untouched down the right sideline for a 95-yard touchdown.
» Impact: The play broke the school record for longest run from scrimmage, 87 yards set by Skippy Dyer in 1955. From that point the UC Davis defense was off-balance the rest of the game. Harris rushed for 147 yards on 11 carries.
» Hawaii coach Norm Chow: "They really overloaded one side and we had to adjust back but I think we wore them out a bit. We were able to make big plays because of that and Paul is a good player and did just that."
4. Fumble
» Situation: Hawaii 20, UC Davis 10, 5:14 remaining, third quarter, UC Davis ball, fourth-and-1 at Hawaii 35.
» The Play: RB Manusamoa Luuga gets a yard for the first down, but CB Nick Nelson forces a fumble which is recovered by S Nick Nelson at the Hawaii 34.
» Impact: Instead of sustaining a drive that could bring UC Davis to within one score, Hawaii took over and RB Melvin Davis capped a six-play drive with a 1-yard rushing TD, the third of four consecutive for Hawaii.
» Gould: "Best tackling team I’ve seen. Once they get a grip on you, they do their jobs. They caused fits for Ohio State. It’s like playing an option team, except they’re on defense. Everything you do, all your rules, you have to throw them out the window."
5. Kemp
» Situation: Hawaii 26, UC Davis 10, 1:06 remaining, third quarter, Hawaii ball, second-and-2 at own 2.
» The Play: WR Marcus Kemp streaks down the left sideline and makes a leaping catch of a pass from Wittek for a 39-yard gain.
» Impact: The same combination capped the 97-yard drive with a 19-yard touchdown. Wittek completed 17 of 24 passes for 272 yards and two touchdowns. Kemp caught five passes for 119 yards. Hawaii amassed 465 yards and scored the most points in a game since beating Army 49-42 on Nov. 30, 2013.
» Hawaii offensive coordinator Don Bailey: "I think in the second half our tempo wore them down in the third quarter. They scrambled a lot more trying to get lined up, trying to get personnel out there. They were trying to search for answers then."
