Man charged with stealing from bank
A 31-year-old man has been charged with stealing from the First Hawaiian Bank branch in Kapahulu.
Fredrick Funaki Jr., of no local address, was charged Wednesday with second-degree theft. His bail was set at $25,000.
Police said Funaki entered the bank at about 9:30 a.m. Saturday, demanded money and fled with an undisclosed amount of cash.
He was arrested at about 6 p.m. Monday at Crane Community Park. Police initially opened a second-degree robbery case, but the charge was reduced to theft. Use or threat of force is a requirement for a robbery charge under state law.
According to a felony charging document, Funaki took more than $300 from the branch. If convicted, he could be sentenced to an extended term of imprisonment because he is a persistent offender with two or more felony convictions, the document said.
