Hawaii island fire rescue personnel resumed their search Monday for a fisherman who was swept out to sea near Kaloli Point on Saturday.
The 51-year-old man was last seen around 2:30 p.m. Saturday, floating about 50 yards offshore.
On Monday firefighters conducted extensive ground, air, shoreline and underwater searches but did not turn up any sign of the missing man. The search was suspended due to high surf conditions and nightfall.
Firefighters will resume the search this morning. The U.S. Coast Guard was involved in the initial search but suspended operations Sunday pending further developments.
2 work furlough inmates back in custody
A 41 year-old Oahu Community Correctional Center inmate who failed to return from a work furlough Sept. 15 was recaptured Sunday, and a Kauai work furlough inmate who ran away just prior to a scheduled check-in over the weekend turned himself in at the Kauai Community Correctional Center on Monday.
Gilberto Dejos was sought by Kauai police and state sheriffs after he showed up for a regularly scheduled check-in on Saturday but ran away before he could be processed.
Dejos had been participating in the extended furlough program, which allows inmates to live and work outside of the facility provided they check in at various times throughout the month.
Dejos is classified as community custody, which is the lowest custody level. He is serving time for third-degree promotion of a detrimental drug. His next parole hearing is scheduled for May. He faces an additional escape charge.
Jerone Batalona, who was serving time for second-degree robbery, failed to return from a furlough pass to the Laumaka Work Furlough Center at 5 p.m. Sept. 15.
He was captured at 8:20 p.m. Sunday at an Ala Wai Boulevard apartment.
He is expected to be charged with second-degree escape.
His next parole hearing was scheduled for March.
