A local subsidiary of a Texas-based gasoline company has made a deal to acquire a mix of gas stations, convenience stores and Subway restaurants on Kauai from a 57-year-old kamaaina firm.
Aloha Petroleum Ltd., a subsidiary of Houston-based Sunoco LP, is buying two gas stations, four convenience stores and two Subway restaurants from Lihue-based MFM Inc. for an undisclosed price.
The acquisition, which is scheduled to close by the end of the year, includes the Shell station and Shell Food Mart in Kapaa; the Shell station, Menehune Food Mart and Subway restaurant in Kilauea; the Menehune Food Marts in Kapahi and Kekaha; and the Subway restaurant in Eleele Shopping Center.
Aloha Petroleum will continue to operate under the current retail brand names for the time being, and is offering jobs to all existing employees.
MFM, established in 1958 and led by Charles and Derek Kawakami, Gary Furugen and Kurt and Gertrude Toma among others, said in a statement that selling was not an easy decision.
“The decision to sell is always a difficult one,” said Charles Kawakami, MFM president and CEO. “It is similar to the loss of a loved one. The people that define this company, the physical structures, the operation, and our customers, these are components in our lives that make us who we are.”
Kawakami thanked employees, vendors and customers for their loyalty, commitment and love, and expressed confidence that Aloha Petroleum will do an outstanding job given its deep roots in Hawaii.
Added Gary Furugen, MFM vice president, “It is a tough decision, but we believe that we are passing the torch onto on to the right company.”
Richard Parry, president and CEO of Aloha Petroleum, said in a statement that the acquisition was a great opportunity to grow expand the company’s retail store operations on Kauai. “We look forward to continuing to service and cater to the needs of the local residents,” he said.
MFM has a long and diverse history in business on the Garden Island. The company is behind more than a dozen familiar Kauai trade names, including Menehune Food Mart, the Kukui Nut Tree Inn Restaurant, Kauai Kitchens and others. Families connected with MFM also started the Big Save supermarket chain on the island.
Big Save was sold in 2011 to Times Supermarkets. That deal led to other assets being split among MFM families. The Norito Kawakami family retained Kauai Kookie, while the H.S. Kawakami and Furugen families retained the four Menehune Food Mart convenience store operations, two Subway restaurant franchises and two Shell gas stations.
MFM said the Kawakami and Furugen families will continue with other ventures, which include commercial properties and shopping centers on Kauai.
