Hawaii island police are investigating a rash of burglaries in Kona, many involving intruders gaining access to condominium units via unlocked sliding doors.
In September alone, police responded to 33 burglaries in the Kona district, including 13 along Alii Drive.
Police are asking the public to report any suspicious activity by calling the police department’s nonemergency line at 935-3311 or by calling 911 if they see evidence of a burglary in progress. Tipsters who prefer to remain anonymous may call the islandwide CrimeStoppers number at 961-8300.
Police offer these tips:
>> Lock your doors and windows when you leave.
>> Don’t leave notes saying you’re not home and when you will return.
>> Become familiar with your neighbors and their cars.
>> Beware strangers knocking on doors.
>> Don’t leave a house key hidden outside.
>> Keep your home well lit.
>> Trim back bushes where burglars could hide.
>> If you see evidence that someone has been in your home or may still be there, leave and call police immediately.
