The leaves aren’t changing colors, and the hot and humid weather continues, but you can still get into the fall spirit, island style, by adding seasonal details to your home.
Simple decor decisions that incorporate the colors of the season will spruce up your home and get you in the holiday spirit.
"We don’t have the four seasons, so it makes it harder," said Joanne Gomez, merchandiser and designer for Pacific Home.
"It’s kind of silly to decorate with autumn leaves, snowmen and things that we don’t have here. We create a fall atmosphere but modify things to represent the islands. Then it’s not cheesy."
Here are some tips to get started:
Home accents
Pillows and throws present an easy way to add color. Fabric remnants can be used to cover pillows, an easy and inexpensive way to alter decor.
When choosing pillows, consider leaves, botanicals and organic prints, and designs that incorporate colors of the season. Coral prints on pillows can be reminiscent of fall leaves, Gomez said.
She likes to use neutral monochromatic schemes accented with pops of color.
Ceramic pots can hold plants, and Gomez says succulents add a fall flair to a dining table. "Gingers and birds of paradise have those red hues that tie in wonderfully with fall decor," she added.
Texture and prints
Use natural woods to decorate. An easy suggestion: Simply put driftwood and shells collected from the beach into a bowl or basket. "Wood baskets and driftwood can be reminiscent of logs on the fire," said Gomez.
Ropes and woven textures are other good choices to mix with fall colors.
Lighting
Lanterns — especially those made with rattan or glass and rope — are reminiscent of the fall season, Gomez said. Candleholders and candles add pops of color, and scented candles can evoke autumn scents such as pumpkin pie.
Color
Shades of red, orange, gold and green are universal fall tones on the mainland, but certain hues can also reflect the tropics. Coral, used in place of orange, for example, represents both actual coral and "our beautiful, bright sunsets," Gomez said. Jewel tones — ruby red, emerald green and topaz — also work well, and transition into the holidays.
