The attorney general’s office on Monday charged a 55-year-old Nuuanu man with attempted murder for allegedly trying to run down a 39-year-old homeless man with his car.
The suspect is already accused of threatening the man last month.
The latest incident happened at 7:36 a.m Saturday at the Kakaako homeless encampment, near Ahui and Olomehani streets, which is state land, the attorney general’s office said.
Jon Hatakenaka was charged with second-degree attempted murder and criminal contempt, according to Attorney General Doug Chin. Bail was set at $500,000.
A conviction for second-degree attempted murder carries a maximum term of life imprisonment with the possibility of parole.
Hatakenaka was arrested by state deputy sheriffs Saturday. He already has a case pending against him for alleged terroristic threatening in the second degree against the same 39-year-old victim.
Hatakenaka was arrested Sept. 30 for allegedly threatening the same man on Ahui Street in Kakaako earlier in the day. He is expected to be charged by city prosecutors in the second-degree terroristic threatening case, which is a misdemeanor, before the end of the week.
His motives were not specified.
