A 55-year-old Nuuanu man attempted twice to run down a 39-year-old homeless man with a car in Kakaako on Saturday, according to court documents.
Jon Hatakenaka was arrested Saturday by Deputy Sheriff Blaise Atabay after a Kakaako Waterfront Park security guard said he saw the suspect in a 2000 silver Kia sedan at 7:28 a.m. trying to hit a man on Ahui Street near Olomehani Street, according to Atabay’s affidavit filed Tuesday in Honolulu District Court.
A preliminary hearing for Hatakenaka on a second-degree attempted murder charge will be held 1:30 p.m. Wednesday in District Court. He is being held in Oahu Community Correctional Center unable to post bail of $500,000.
Security guard Nathan Lockwood flagged down a deputy sheriff, pointing to a silver Kia stopped in the left lane of Ahui Street facing in the wrong direction and a man on foot by a tree.
The man, who had been walking his dog, was yelling at the driver and appeared to be upset, according to the affidavit.
The victim told Lockwood that Hatakenaka had been arrested Sept. 30 when the suspect tried to hit the same homeless man with a pipe, according to the affidavit. The city prosecutor’s office said Tuesday a second-degree terroristic threatening charge was filed against Hatakenaka in that case.
According to the court document, on Saturday, Hatakenaka drove his car toward the homeless man on Ahui Street, crossing into the oncoming lane and jumping the curb. His car was blocked by a fire hydrant, preventing him from hitting the homeless man.
The victim said Hatakenaka yelled at him, telling him he was going to die, the affidavit said.
The victim said he ran up the sidewalk past Hatakenaka’s car, and the suspect then made a U-turn and drove on the sidewalk, yelling that he was going to hit him, according to the affidavit. The victim then crossed Ahui Street, and Hatakenaka tried to hit him again with his car, the affidavit said.
Lockwood told the sheriff’s deputy that he saw Hatakenaka trying to run down the homeless man.
Court records show that Hatakenaka was caught and convicted of a prostitution charge, a petty misdemeanor, stemming from a 2011 Honolulu police sting in Kakaako targeting prostitution customers. His criminal record includes other misdemeanor convictions for assault and terroristic threatening.
