Higgins was in a walking boot that protected her sprained left ankle but was able to do setting reps while seated on a bolster as well as toss balls from the sideline during drills. Her playing status for this week’s Big West matches remains questionable.
Greeley, rehabbing a left knee sprain, participated in passing and defensive drills but was not allowed to jump. She likely will be cleared to play by Friday’s match with CSUN.
Redshirting is the obvious answer for freshman middle Natasha Burns, who fractured her right hand on Aug. 19 during the second week of preseason camp. Burns said her injury will be re-evaluated in three weeks, making it unlikely that No. 8 Hawaii would burn a year of her eligibility with less than nine weeks left in the season.
The Rainbow Wahine take an eight-match winning streak and a No. 1 ranking in blocking nationally into the contest with the Matadors. Hawaii had 12 blocks in each of last week’s road matches against Cal State Fullerton and UC Riverside, moving up from No. 5 in blocks per set (3.27). Senior middle Olivia Magill ranks ninth nationally at 1.51 bps and sophomore middle Emily Maglio is 27th (1.38).
