Longs Drugs opened on Monday its first Waikiki location at the former Teddy Bear World site at the Bank of Hawaii Waikiki Center.
The two-story, 20,000-square-foot store includes a pharmacy. A 7-Eleven store is also on the property.
Longs is entering an area dominated by ABC Stores, which has some 35 locations scattered throughout the state’s largest tourism hub. While ABC doesn’t sell prescription drugs, they do offer over-the-counter medications, as well as convenience foods and toiletries.
The drugstore chain, which is a part of CVS Pharmacy based in Rhode Island, is also competing with Japan-based convenience store Lawson USA Hawaii Inc. Lawson opened its first two station locations in the U.S. in 2012 at the Sheraton Waikiki and at the Moana Surfrider, with plans to open 20 to 30 more stores on Oahu.
