Festival celebrates kava, culture
The Kava Festival takes place Saturday, 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., on the front lawn of the University Laboratory School, at University Avenue and Dole Street.
The event features kava tasting, a plant sale and specialists sharing the culture, science and economics of kava. The school is at 1776 University Ave. Call Jonathan Yee at 256-5605.
Talks, field trips mark food summit
The Third Annual North Shore Food Summit focuses on food and energy systems with field trips, guest speakers and interactive breakout sessions, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Oct. 23 and 24.
Community leaders, residents, local food producers, North Shore landowners, policymakers, cultural practitioners and others will gather to examine: costs of food and fuel import dependency, traditional and cultural resource management, impact of high energy costs on local food production, use of agricultural lands for clean energy and biofuel production, and more.
Oct. 23 field trips include: Turtle Bay Mauka and SunEdison Kahuku Wind; TerViva biofuel feedstock production and SunEdison Kawailoa Wind; the Whitmore Ag Project; Hawaii Fish Company and the Haleiwa “Ag Corridor” that includes Counter Culture, Holoholo and Twin Bridge farms.

3 local sushi bars make national list
Sushi Sasabune in Honolulu, Sansei Seafood Restaurant and Sushi Bar (Oahu, Maui, Big Island locations), and Sushi Paradise on Maui placed in The Daily Meal’s Top 35 Best Sushi Bars in America.
Hawaii was among 12 states with winning sushi; New York topped the list with 10 restaurants and took the top three spots with, respectively, Masa, Sushi Yasuda and O-Ya (also in Boston).
