The headline that Hawaii’s jobless rate has hit a 7-year low of 3.4 percent sounds like good news, reflecting an improving economy and fewer unemployed folks. But, it’s news that some clueless folks outside of Hawaii must heed, before buying their one-way tickets here to “paradise” — only to quickly land into homelessness for lack of jobs and prospects.
The lack of available jobs and of affordable housing are two critical reasons against moving here without a game plan secured. That applies to any single person hoping to live here — but goes double, quadruple, tenfold, for any parent who’s thinking of uprooting with kids in tow.
A gifted teacher succeeds with her students
If you’re an underachieving third-grader in Kapunahala Elementary School, you’re out of excuses.
Stephanie Mew, the third-grade teacher at the Kaneohe school, was named the 2016 State Teacher of the Year by the state Department of Education. Her signature teaching method — First Attempt in Learning, or FAIL — gives her students room to pursue their dreams without fear of making a mistake or two.
It’s a good lesson for all students, especially the younger ones, who might lack the confidence to test their educational limits. Congratulations to Mew and all her charges, past and present.
