A police officer who had come to the aid of a fellow officer during a routine traffic stop early Friday morning in the Keeaumoku area was brutally attacked by two brothers, according to police.
According to an affidavit filed Monday in Honolulu District Court , Jordi Viela, 24, attacked officer C. Giesseman, placing him in a chokehold that restricted his breathing.
Several other police officers were able to restrain Viela on the ground and place him in handcuffs, arresting officer Jared Spiker said in the affidavit.
While Giesseman was trying to regain his composure, Jace Viela, 22, approached him and punched him in the face with a closed fist, Spiker said.
Jordi and Jace Viela were arrested on suspicion of assault of a law enforcement officer and resisting arrest. Prosecutors later only charged the two men with first-degree assault of a law enforcement officer.
Bail for each was set at $11,000. However, only Jace Viela is still in custody, unable to post bail of $11,000. Jordi Viela is free after posting bail on Tuesday. A preliminary hearing in District Court for Jace Viela will be held today, while Jordi Viela’s hearing will be held Oct. 29.
Spiker said in the affidavit that at 3:30 a.m. Friday, he saw a white Nissan truck with five occupants pull out of the parking lot on 655 Keeaumoku St. and drive over the curb, causing the vehicle to make a loud thud as it hit the road.
The truck stopped at Keeaumoku and Makaloa streets and remained idle for about 90 seconds as the traffic signals ran through their cycle, , Spiker said. The truck had its right turn blinker on even though there was no car or pedestrian preventing the truck from making a right turn, he said.
Spiker said he stopped the truck on Makalola Street, and as he approached the vehicle Jace Viela jumped out of the bed of the truck and said: “What officer. Why the … you pulling us over? Leave us alone.”
Spiker said he told Jace Viela that the truck had been driven over a curb and the driver was inattentive, and asked him to get back into the truck.
A dispute ensued, and the assisting officer, Giesseman, was later assaulted, according to the affidavit.
Two other men who were riding in the truck also were arrested for misdemeanor offenses stemming from the traffic incident and will appear in District Court on Nov. 13.
Romelius Hilongo, 23, was cited for harassment, disorderly conduct and refusing to obey a police officer — all petty misdemeanors. He also was charged with resisting arrest — a misdemeanor.
Anthony Tran, 23, was cited for harassment.
