Maui police charged a 49-year-old man with attempted murder Monday in connection with a stabbing in a Kihei park that left a Kahului man in critical condition.
Police arrested Robert Prout, who did not provide a local address, shortly after 11 a.m. Monday and later charged him with second-degree attempted murder and contempt of court. He was being held at the Wailuku Police Station with bail set at about $1 million.
When officers responded to a report of a stabbing in Waipuilani Park at about 3:55 p.m. Sunday, they found the 36-year-old victim, but the suspect had fled the scene. The victim was transported to Maui Memorial Medical Center. An investigation led to Prout’s arrest.
Lahaina woman critically injured in highway crash
A 32-year-old Lahaina woman was in critical condition at Maui Memorial Medical Center, where she was taken Sunday night after the car she was driving collided with another car.
Maui police said the collision occurred at 5:52 p.m. Sunday on Honoapiilani Highway, to a half-mile south of Pohaku Aeko Street in Lahaina.
The Lahaina resident was driving a blue Toyota Corolla and attempted to cross the southbound lane of Honoapiilani Highway from the southbound shoulder in order to head north, police said.
The Toyota was broadsided by a silver Toyota 4Runner driven by a 28-year-old Kahului man, who also was heading south, police said.
The driver of the 4Runner was taken to the hospital with minor injuries.
