Hormel’s new Spam Snacks are beginning to show up in supermarkets and convenience stores in Hawaii.

Spam Snacks are bite-size, dried Spam bites that nonetheless are moist when bitten into. The bites taste like Spam, with a slightly different texture.

The product, sold in a foil package, comes in three flavors: classic, bacon and teriyaki.

In an informal taste test conducted by the Honolulu Star-Advertiser, people who liked Spam generally liked Spam Snacks. People who didn’t wouldn’t taste the product.

Hawaii is one of the first places in the country to get Spam Snacks, which is not surprising considering how popular the canned product is here.

Scott Gamble, vice president of LH Gamble, the company that distributes Spam in Hawaii, said Spam Snacks should be in most stores where regular Spam is sold by the end of next month. The 1.4-ounce packages sell for about $2.69 to $2.99.

“I expect sales to go well, especially given the growth we are seeing in the jerky/snacking categories,” Gamble said in an email.

For the record, the nutritional information says each package contains 220 calories, 10 grams of protein, 590 milligrams of salt, 60 milligrams of cholesterol, 1 gram of sugar and 19 grams of fat.
