The case of a 45-year-old homeless man who allegedly robbed the Waikiki branch of Bank of Hawaii on Thursday has been turned over to federal officials for prosecution.
The man was arrested on suspicion of first-degree robbery at about 2:18 p.m. Thursday near the bike path along the Ala Wai Golf Course on Kapahulu Avenue.
The incident began at about 1 p.m. when a man walked into the Bank of Hawaii on Kalakaua Avenue and said he had a bomb.
After the suspect was detained, police called in a bomb unit to check the man’s bag and closed Kapahulu Avenue between Leahi and Campbell avenues at about 2:40 p.m. The road was reopened at 5 p.m. after the bomb disposal unit took an X-ray photo of the backpack and learned it contained only clothes.
Needle found in candy under investigation
Police are investigating a needle found by an eighth-grader in Halloween candy in West Oahu on Saturday.
Christine Liu said her 13-year-old daughter had been trick-or-treating Halloween night in Ocean Pointe — an Ewa Beach subdivision — and in Kapolei near the fire station.
The girl discovered a sewing needle in a Nestle Crunch bar after ripping open the wrapper and cracking the bar, her mother said.
Liu posted photos on social media and was urged by friends to call police. She reported the incident, and police opened a case of attempted second-degree assault.
