Hawaii’s Tri Bourne and Taylor Crabb were among the award winners announced by the Association of Volleyball Professionals on Wednesday.
Bourne, an Academy of the Pacific graduate, and partner John Hyden were named Team of the Year. They finished in the top three in all four tournaments they entered, winning the Cincinnati Open and AVP Championships, finishing second at the Manhattan Beach Open and third at the Chicago Open.
Crabb, a Punahou graduate, followed in the footsteps of teammate and older brother Trevor when named Newcomer of the Year. Taylor led the AVP tour in defense with 313 digs in 58 sets for a 5.4 average and teamed with his brother to finish third at the Manhattan Beach Open.
KIRA race for watershed protection
The inaugural Huaka’i Makai, a paddling and swimming event to benefit the Hui O Ko’olaupoko watershed protection project, is scheduled for Saturday at Kailua Bay.
Sponsored by Kanaka Ikaika Racing Association, the event is open to swimmers and SUP, OC-1 and OC-6 paddlers. Registration is from 8 to 9 a.m. with races starting at 9:30.

Sandell earns MPSF diving honor
University of Hawaii diver Johan Sandell was named the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation/Turbo Male Athlete of the Week on Wednesday.
Sandell, a freshman from Sweden, won the 1-meter (357.05) and 3-meter (367.05) diving events during a dual meet with Air Force on Friday.
Both marks surpassed the cutoff for NCAA Zone Qualifying.
BYUH volleyball sweeps past Dominican
Kathleen Collette Kalougata had 10 kills and 11 digs and Ying Chun Chen recorded 40 assists and 17 digs as Brigham Young-Hawaii beat Dominican (Calif.) 25-9, 25-19, 25-20 on Wednesday in San Rafael, Calif.
The Seasiders improved to 12-10, 10-4 PacWest, while the Penguins dropped to 6-15, 3-12.
Chaminade ranked No. 9 in West
The Chaminade volleyball team was ranked No. 9 in the first NCAA Division II West Regional rankings, released Wednesday.
The Silverswords are 15-7 overall and 8-6 PacWest.
Western Washington, Alaska Anchorage and Central Washington held the top three spots.
The top eight teams in the final rankings will qualify for the NCAA regionals.
