The moped rider who suffered fatal head injuries in a collision with a pickup truck in Aina Haina was identified as Hunter J.L. Ortego, 17, of Honolulu.
At about 2:40 p.m. Wednesday, Ortego was traveling west on a white 1987 moped on Kalanianaole Highway in the bike lane at a high rate of speed. Police said the moped ran a red light and collided with a red 1999 Ford pickup truck driven by a 23-year-old Honolulu woman.
A witness told police the driver had the green light and was making a left turn onto East Hind Drive from the highway when the moped hit the vehicle.
Ortego was taken to the Queen’s Medical Center in critical condition and pronounced dead shortly after.
He was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash. Police said excessive speed appears to have been a factor.
The pickup driver was not hurt.
Ortego’s death is Oahu’s 42nd traffic-related fatality this year, compared with 51 at the same time last year.
The family has set up a fundraiser to help cover funeral costs at gofundme.com/jf8srcpg.
