Recent rumblings suggest that there may be some action soon at the long-abandoned north-Strip building site of the Fontainebleau. After it has been sitting unattended for six years, county officials have indicated that they’ll push for one of two improvement actions at the site.
The first is a schedule of “offsite improvements,” which would include adding outdoor lighting and widening sidewalks. However, the preferred action is covering the 68-story building with a cosmetic wrap known as “urban camouflage” — essentially a giant tarp that covers the structure. It wouldn’t be a first for the Strip. In fact, a tarp is currently in place less than a mile south of the Fontainebleau, covering the unfinished St. Regis condo tower adjacent to the Venetian.
Plaza Sports Gallery: The downtown Plaza has opened a “Sports Gallery” featuring memorabilia from the closed Las Vegas Club that dates from the ’60s. Many of the items are available for purchase, but the exhibit is free to view daily from 3 to 11 p.m.
DDS HH: The Double Down Saloon has a happy hour weekdays from noon to 5 p.m., with all drinks priced at $2. It includes a big selection of beers and call liquors, and rates as one of the best pure drink-discount happy hours in town. The Double Down is convenient to and from the airport, located near the Hard Rock.
Taco shop returns: After a surprising closing at the end of last year, Tacos El Gordo is reopening in its same north-Strip location across from the site of Resorts World Las Vegas. The taco shop was a top late-night go-to spot on the Strip and should be again.
