Kelly Slater, an 11-time world tour champion, headlines a distinguished list of invitees for the 31st Quiksilver in Memory of Eddie Aikau at Waimea Bay.
The one-day big-wave riding event will take place only when waves meet or exceed wave-face heights of approximately 40 feet. The event has a three-month holding period that will begin Dec. 1 and run through Feb. 29. The official opening celebration with the Aikau family will be held on Dec. 3 at Waimea Bay.
Joining Slater will be more than 40 other invited surfers, including Aikau’s younger brother, Clyde. Among others invited are Bruce Irons, Sunny Garcia, Ian Walsh, Jamie Mitchell, Jamie O’Brien, Jeremy Flores and John John Florence.
Flores is ranked eighth in the world surf tour leaderboard, with Slater ninth and Florence 15th.
The Quiksilver In Memory of Eddie Aikau has been held only eight times, most recently in 2009, with California’s Greg Long winning the event.
