Jeren Nishimoto, a Kaiser High School senior, signed a National Letter of Intent to join the Chaminade men’s golf team for the 2016-17 season, coach Renee Yuen announced Tuesday.
Nishimoto is a four-year member of the Cougars varsity team, and will be a second-year team captain. Nishimoto is coming off a junior year in which he was voted team MVP, and was named to the OIA second team.
In 2015, Nishimoto finished in the top 10 at the King Auto Group State Junior Championship (boys age 12-18 division). In June, he made the cut and finished 12th at the Pearl Country Club Invitational, competing against older golfers.
HPU goes cold against Alaska Anchorage
The Hawaii Pacific women’s basketball team was held in check offensively against seventh-ranked Alaska Anchorage, falling 62-51 at Moanalua High School.
HPU (1-2) was held to just 34.1 percent shooting from the field. Brianne Yasukochi led the Sharks with a game-high 16 points, but nine came from the free-throw line. Five players from Alaska Anchorage scored in double figures, led by former Mid-Pacific player Kiki Robertson’s 14 points.
The Sharks will next face Arizona Christian on Saturday as part of the BYU-Hawaii Invitational.
Pros win Governor’s Cup
The third format of play in the 43rd Governor John A. Burns Challenge Cup was held Tuesday in Lanikai, with 12 singles matches played.
At the conclusion of singles play, the Professional team defeated the Amateur team by a score of 15.5 points to 8.5 points. The win ended an eight-year winning streak by the Amateur team.
The professional team consisted of Garrett Okamura, Kevin Carll, Kevin Shimomura, Bradley Shigezawa, Juan Rodriguez, T.J. Kua, John Hearn, Nainoa Calip, Ryan Acosta, Jake Grodzinsky, Kyle Hayashi and Todd Rego.
