Nothing from outside of the arc but plenty from behind the other black line.
Hawaii hit 27 free throws, including 11 in the final 2:52 Friday night, to pull away from Loyola Marymount 65-51 and remain unbeaten this season. Led by center Connie Morris’ 16 points and ice-water-veins free-throw shooting from sophomore guard Sarah Toeaina and senior guard Destiny King down the stretch, the Rainbow Wahine will take a 3-0 record into Sunday’s championship game of the Bank of Hawaii Classic.
It will be a battle of the unbeatens when Hawaii takes on Washington State (3-0) at 5 p.m. on Sunday, the middle game of a triple header that includes the Rainbow Warriors playing Nicholls State at 7:30 p.m.
WSU held on for a 70-57 victory over Nevada in Friday’s opener. Nevada (0-3) and Loyola Marymount (0-3) meet for third place at 2:30 p.m. Sunday.
"I think (Washington State) will pose some problems for us and we’ll pose some problems for them," Wahine coach Laura Beeman said. "We’re 3-0 and our men are 3-0. We’re a combined 6-0 and we want to keep that going."
Toeaina hit her last five free throws to finish with 13 points and King all six of her attempts for 12 points in a physical and ragged game that saw 53 fouls called and a combined 45 turnovers, 24 by the Wahine.
"I’ll take ugly wins over pretty losses any day, and there was some ugly basketball tonight," Beeman said. "We play physical basketball and this was a very physical game.
"Because of our size and physical posts, we were able to (impose) our will on LMU because our posts are hard to handle."
Morris proved too much early, with 13 first-half points, and scored Hawaii’s only basket in the final four minutes. The rest of the quarter was spent at the line, including six straight by King, who wanted to atone for her 50 percent free-throw shooting performance on Sunday at Northern Arizona.
"I am not a bad free-throw shooter," King said. "I was 5-for-10 the last game and I didn’t want to shoot that percentage again."
It proved the difference at the end, as the Lions were unable to get any closer than 49-42 with 6:05 left.
Hawaii broke open a tight game midway through the second quarter, using an 11-1 run during a three-minute span to take the lead for good at 32-22. Morris scored seven consecutive points during that span, part of a perfect first-half performance (5-for-5 from the field, 3-for-3 from the line) that helped the Wahine take a 34-26 lead at intermission.
"It’s not that I was demanding the ball, but at times it just seemed super easy," Morris said. "It got physical, but I had to not let the voices in my head get to me and play through it."
Helping the Lions stay close in the opening 20 minutes was the amazingly quick freshman forward NK Ilang. The Nigerian national scored 12 points in just eight minutes on the floor and finished with 14 before fouling out with 2:30 to go.
Senior guard Sophie Taylor added 11 points for LMU, which finished with four 3-pointers to none by Hawaii. The Lions were 13-for-22 from the line and whistled for 33 fouls.
Washington State 70, Nevada 57
Freshman forward Borislava Hristova scored 23 points and the Cougars outscored the Wolf Pack 17-6 in the second quarter to remain undefeated. The Bulgarian national was an impressive 11-for-17 from the floor and added seven rebounds for WSU.
For Nevada, senior forward Nyasia LeSure finished with a double-double (18 points, 10 rebounds).
