No. 1 Emporia State routs Hawaii Hilo
The NCAA Division II top-ranked Emporia State University women’s basketball team (6-0) shot 50.8 percent from the floor en route to a 82-53 victory over Hawaii Hilo on the final day of the Oahu Thanksgiving Classic at the Cannon Activities Center.
ESU was led by Kelsey Barnwell’s 21 points and Sandra Ngoie chipped in 10 points and nine rebounds for the Hornets. Lauren Hong led the Vulcans (0-5) with 13 points.
Chaminade dropped to 0-3 with an 88-55 loss to the University of Mary in other action from the tournament. Lilia Maio fell two rebounds short of a double-double with 10 points and eight rebounds for the Silverswords. Britney Dietz scored 30 points for the Marauders, who improve to 5-2.
Host BYU Hawaii (3-2) dropped a 69-57 contest to Armstrong State despite Valerie Nawahine’s career-high 26 points. B’Kiya Webb’s double-double of 19 points and 13 rebounds paced Armstrong State, which remains unbeaten at 7-0.
Rounding out the local PacWest teams in the classic was Hawaii Pacific, which dropped a 64-62 game to Western Washington. Kiana Gandy’s buzzer-beating jumper gave the Vikings (3-3) the win over the Sharks (2-4), who were paced by Brianne Yasukochi’s 19 points.
