2 visitors aided after falling off boards
Maui firefighters and lifeguards aided two visitors who lost their stand-up paddleboards in windy seas off Kaanapali Shores on Saturday.
Resort security patrolling the area called 911 at 10:33 a.m. after watching the pair struggle to make any progress against 30 mph winds, Maui County said by email.
Lahaina firefighters arrived on the beach fronting the Maui Kai Resort at 10:41 a.m. By then, the couple had fallen off their boards and could not catch them.
Witnesses pointed out the man, 48, swimming toward shore about 25 yards out.
The woman, 52, was drifting about a quarter-mile to half-mile offshore. An ocean safety rescue watercraft picked her up and brought her safely back to the beach.
Neither required medical attention. The pair is visiting from Sausalito, Calif.
Residents seek better security at cemetery
LIHUE, Kauai >> Residents want a fence and gate with a combination lock installed at the Hanapepe Hawaiian Cemetery after the site was vandalized.
The Garden Island reports Gina Malia Nobrega-Olivera discovered the trashed cemetery and misplaced flowers and vases when she visited the gravesite of her only daughter, who was stillborn and buried in June.
Nobrega-Olivera, whose father is also buried at the cemetery, said the cemetery has been vandalized before, but this is the first time she’s filed a police report. She says a community member would provide the fence.
County parks director Lenny Rapozo said a fence could cause problems with permits and access for visitors, but that it’s great the community’s willing to privately fund it.
