University of Hawaii football player Kennedy Tulimasealii was destined to be a leader.
He was born on Presidents Day, and named after the country’s 35th president.
On Tuesday, Tulimasesalii, a junior defensive lineman, was selected to the 2015 Mountain West Conference’s first team.
“He’s an explosive player, (and) a great kid,” said Lance Samuseva, who coached the defensive linemen.
Tulimasealii, a 2013 Waianae High graduate, was born in American Samoa and raised on Oahu’s Leeward Coast. He admitted to building strength by performing yard work for his church. More than 15 family members, many wearing shirts with “Tulimasealii” on the back, attend his home games.
“He grew into a leader this past season,” Samuseva said. “I’m very proud of him, and happy for him. I can’t wait to see him play again next year.”
Tulimasealii had a breakout season in 2015, leading the league with 18.5 backfield tackles. He also had 3.5 sacks and eight quarterback hurries. He was third among MWC defensive linemen with 63 tackles.
Tulimasealii played end, 3-technique tackle and, in the nickel package, nose tackle.
“He came to play,” said Abraham Elimimian, who served as defensive coordinator for Saturday’s regular-season finale. “I think he’s just a tremendous athlete. He’s got the quickness of a linebacker and the strength of a defensive lineman. I’ve played with a lot of good players, and he’s unique.”
Right guard Dejon Allen, left tackle Ben Clarke, inside linebacker Julian Gener, cornerback Nick Nelson and punter/kicker Rigo Sanchez received MWC honorable mention.
San Diego State, which will represent the West Division in the league’s title game against Air Force on Saturday, swept the top awards. Running back Donnel Pumphrey was named the offensive player of the year, defensive back Damontae Kazee was the top defensive player, returner Rashaad Penny earned specialists award, and Rocky Long was coach of the year.
