Synopsis: This is a chant of lamentation for Aunty Aggie Kalanihookaha Cope, an icon of Hawaiian education, politics and the arts. She exemplified the term “doer and shaker” in her work to elevate the condition of the Hawaiian people. We will surely miss her.
Auwe! Auwe ka hoi e!
Ua hala aku nei ka lani
Mai ka lani no a ka honua
Pa mai no kahi uila
Ho-o mai no i ka honua nei
O ka lele wale akula no ia
I ke ao polohiwa a Kane
Lele pu me ka ha o ke ola
Ka ha o Ka-lani-hoo-ka-ha
Ka lani hooulu manao
E malamalama ai kanaka
A pii ai ke kulana nohona
Aia no i ka lani ke ao
Naauao ai ka lehulehu
Ue ka hoi ka maka
A luuluu kahi naau
Na wai e ole ke kaumaha
Ua aloha ia e ka lani?
Ke aloha a Kalanihookaha
Auwe! Auwe ke aloha e!
O ke alo minoaka
Ke aka no o ke aloha
He aloha lahui kanaka
Kanaka nui, kanaka iki
He aloha kamalii

He hale anu ko-u wale

Ka maka nana i ka pono
I pono ka nohona kamalii
O kamalii kolohe nae
