The second annual Special Movie Night, in honor of Korean War veterans and their families, was held Monday at the Doris Duke Theatre. The film appropriately was “Ode to My Father,” which starts with the Korean War and continues to modern-day Korea. It is the second-most-watched film in the history of Korean cinema with more than 14 million tickets sold. The Consulate General of the Republic of Korea in Honolulu, KBFD, and the Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs worked together to make this event happen. In attendance were Korean Consul General Walter Paik and his wife and Hawaii first lady Dawn Ige. Gov. David Ige and his wife visited South Korea in early November for the first time. They visited the War Memorial of Korea to honor Hawaii residents who took part in the “forgotten war.” Paik honored the many Korean War veterans and recognized the strong alliance with the U.S. that helped South Korea become the 10th-largest economy in the world.
