The Royal Hawaiian Band, decked out in Christmas finery, will give a free holiday concert at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Hawaii Theatre.
A sit-down concert in a formal venue is a rarity for the band. Director Clarke Bright calls it “a privilege and an honor.”
The Royal Hawaiian Band was founded in 1836 by King Kamehameha III with a mission that continues today: to perpetuate Hawaiian culture, foster and promote music, inspire young musicians and enrich the lives of the community.
On Thursday the band’s performance will be heightened with harp, stand-up bass, woodwinds and more.
Popular island entertainers will contribute, including guest singers Karen Keawehawai‘i and Jerry Santos of Olomana, hula halau Ka La ‘Onohi Mai o Ha‘eha‘e, the Kamehameha Schools Children’s Chorus and comedian Frank De Lima.
(A story in Friday’s TGIF section gave the wrong date for the concert.)
