In the first of two trips to Oahu this month, Oklahoma picked up a win in an early-season matchup of top-10 teams on Monday.
But the Sooners’ 78-55 victory over Villanova was just part of the takeaway in participating in the Pearl Harbor Invitational.
“Just a great weekend for our guys to come here and have an even a greater appreciation for what our service people have done and how they’ve sacrificed,” Oklahoma coach Lon Kruger said. “Our guys came in with a high level, but they’ll leave with a much higher level and will carry that with them the rest of their lives.
“The ballgame was awfully good, but all the other stuff around it much, much better.”
No. 24 Oregon capped the doubleheader with a 67-47 win over Navy at Bloch Arena in the event held in conjunction with the 74th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor. Survivors of the attack and other World War II veterans were recognized during timeouts, drawing a standing ovation each time from the crowd comprised primarily of military personnel.
“I’m excited for those soldiers, sailors, airmen, Marines both past and present who serve,” Lt. General Anthony Crutchfield said before tipoff. “I’m very proud of them and I’m honored to stand here today in the midst of true legends, those who fought in World War II.”
Crutchfield also noted that “Oklahoma represents one of the ships that was sunk here at Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7. I think that’s a real tribute to the men that lost their lives on that ship.”
The Sooners, ranked seventh in the Associated Press poll released on Monday, connected on a season-high 14 3-pointers and never trailed against No. 9 Villanova. They’ll return later this month to play in the Diamond Head Classic.
Oklahoma guard Isaiah Cousins went 4-for-4 from behind the arc and led five Sooners in double figures with a game-high 19 points, six rebounds and 10 assists. Oklahoma (6-0) took a 32-26 lead into halftime and shot 57 percent in the second half, going 8-for-12 from 3-point range.
“I thought (Cousins) took the game over in the second half,” Kruger said. “He’s so good off the dribble, he’s making shots. He just made so many good plays for other players.”
Guard Buddy Hield, a senior from the Bahamas, hit four 3-pointers in the first 6:10 on his way to an 18-point performance in a sweltering gym.
“I’m from the islands too, so I’m used to playing in the heat a lot,” Hield said. “I felt back in my young days playing in the heat. But all we need is a towel and some water and we’re good.”
While Oklahoma went 14-for-26 from 3-point range, Villanova (7-1) finished 4-for-32 behind the arc and shot 32 percent overall. The Wildcats erased an early 12-point deficit to tie the Sooners late in the first half, only to see Oklahoma bolt away again early in the second half.
“I think we did a decent job getting to the rim,” Villanova coach Jay Wright said. “I thought we took some tough (3-pointers) early, but after that we had great looks and just didn’t hit them. We got to the rim, we got to the foul line, but we had a tough time stopping them.”
Villanova guards Phil Booth, Josh Hart and Ryan Arcidiacono all finished with 10 points for the Wildcats.
No. 24 Oregon 67, Navy 47
Playing without their leading scorer, the Ducks (7-1) broke away early and held off the Midshipmen (7-3) to rebound from their first loss of the season.
Forward Dillon Brooks finished with 19 points, six rebounds and six assists to lead four Oregon players in double figures. Forward Chris Boucher posted 14 points and 14 rebounds and forward Dwayne Benjamin contributed 16 points.
Freshman guard Tyler Dorsey, who averaged a team-high 14.4 points per game, sat out due to an injury suffered in Oregon’s loss to UNLV last Friday.
Oregon’s defense helped spur the win with 14 steals and eight blocked shots and Oregon made six of its first eight shots in building a double-digit lead.
“We got some good looks, I thought our press really was effective for us,” Oregon coach Dana Altman said. “So I think getting a good start was important for us and not to have much of a hangover from our last ballgame.”
Navy forward Will Kelly led the Midshipmen with 13 points and eight rebounds and Jace Hogan finished with 10 points and five rebounds.
After the game, the Oregon players gave their jerseys to fans around the court.
“We’re the Fighting Ducks and we’re just giving it back to the Navy that fights for us no matter where they’re at,” Brooks said.
