Big surf could splash onto North Shore roads

High surf and high tide might overlap sometime after midnight Tuesday and cause some wash-up onto roadways on the North Shore.

Waves as high as 20 to 30 feet are expected to pound the north shores of the Hawaiian Islands today, and west shores will also get their fair share of 12- to 20-foot surf.

A high-surf warning is in effect through 6 p.m. today for north and west shores of Kauai, Molokai, Niihau and Oahu, the National Weather Service said. Maui’s north shore is under a high-surf warning through today.

The big swell did not arrive as expected Tuesday, and surf was 6 to 10 feet on Oahu’s North Shore and 6 to 9 feet on Kauai’s north shore.

Ocean Safety lifeguards issued 395 warnings and made 16 rescues on the North Shore and 370 warnings and six rescues in West Oahu.

After north shore surf peaks Tuesday night into today, this northwest swell is expected to gradually decline through the week.

Public input sought on Kauai election change

A proposal to require Kauai County Council members to run for election in districts is being considered by the Kauai County Charter Review Commission. All seven Council members are currently elected on anat-large basis.

The commission is conducting an online survey on the subject, which can be accessed at 808ne.ws/1XUNYsh. The deadline for the survey is Dec. 31.
