An apparent domestic altercation near a Chinatown intersection touched off an incident in which a man ran down the middle of Nuuanu Avenue and injured three responding police officers, and his wife attempted to interfere with the arrest, court records show.
Scott Gordon, 28, of Mililani was charged Saturday with three counts of first-degree assault on a law enforcement officer. His bail was set at $100,000.
Gordon was arguing with his wife, with whom he has an 18-month-old daughter, about 2:45 a.m. Friday near South Beretania Street and Nuuanu Avenue when he slapped her on the head, according to a police affidavit filed in Honolulu District Court.
When police responded to the couple’s argument, Gordon ran into traffic on Nuuanu Avenue, mauka of Beretania Street, forcing numerous vehicles to swerve or stop to avoid hitting him.
According to the affidavit, when one officer caught up with Gordon in the roadway, he turned and struck the officer in the face with an 8-inch metal object, causing a laceration to the officer’s face.
Gordon continued running up and down Nuuanu in the roadway, trying to avoid officers, and hit a second officer in the back of the head with the same metal object.
When a third officer tried to tackle Gordon, he struck the officer in his right hand, causing a laceration. It was unclear what he struck the third officer with.
Gordon’s wife tried to prevent officers from arresting her husband and was arrested for investigation of obstructing a government operation and resisting arrest, police said.
The three injured officers and Gordon, who also sustained injuries, were treated at a hospital and released, police said.
