Commuter airlines need a good home
For Hawaii’s two small interisland commuter airlines, the site of a future home is, well, up in the air.
Island Air and Mokulele Airlines will need to do some serious brainstorming with state transportation officials, now that the state has ditched plans for a new commuter terminal — part of a bigger overhaul of Honolulu Airport — due to higher-than-expected costs.
Also contributing to the decision was the demise here of go! and Pacific Wings, leaving the remaining commuters Island Air and Mokulele unable to cover the new terminal costs.
Their current building is slated to be replaced by a terminal for larger planes.
We’ll be watching for a good resolution on this situation. Hawaii is an island state that needs commuter airlines, and they, in turn, need a safe and appropriate terminal from which to operate.
Don’t get run over by all the runners
Yes, the U.S. women’s soccer team canceled, but no matter. Our premier international sporting event — the Honolulu Marathon — kicks off first thing Sunday morning in Waikiki.
The great race will feature the 2014 women’s and men’s defending champions, Joyce Chepkirui and Wilson Chebet, both from Kenya.
Behind them will be about 30,000 other hardy souls from just about everywhere else.
We wish all the runners the best of luck and a cool day with light breezes.
And for those driving near the race route, a little patience, please.
