For Christmas, you
can buy your favorite University of Hawaii football fan a sparkly see-through jersey with a “blinged out” sequined H logo across the front. For modesty’s sake, a tank top could be worn underneath. There’s also a T-shirt (not see-through) with sequined letters spelling out “Warrior pride” on the front.
Victoria’s Secret is selling University of Hawaii logo wear, both online and in their Hawaii stores. It’s part of the company’s Pink Collegiate Collection, which includes logo wear from more than 50 universities (not currently Harvard, nor Yale, but Penn State and even BYU). There are also things like dorm room decor (pillowcases, bed spreads, etc.) sold under the Victoria’s Secret Pink label.
The UH collection is modest — no green H undergarments.
However, there have been Victoria’s Secret panty trees on the Manoa campus.
(If you’re 40 and over, you’re probably thinking, “What?!!” If you’re under 25, you’re thinking, “So what?” If you’re in your golden years, you might be wondering, “Who is Victoria and what’s up with her Secret?”)
College life is very different in 2015, and it’s not just smartphones and Google Docs. Even panty raids are different.
Victoria’s Secret, the company known for its lacy lingerie and elaborate burlesque fashion shows, engages representatives on college campuses across the country. The reps do things like host viewing parties for the televised lingerie fashion show, as they did Tuesday at the UH-Manoa Art Auditorium. On occasion, the reps give away free merchandise. Students follow the Victoria’s Secret campus rep on social media, and when the word goes out that there’s free underwear hanging from a tree on campus, girls (mostly) flock to the panty tree to raid a few pairs for themselves.
Yes, really.
It’s kind of the same as free pizza. Sort of. And, according to UH spokesman Dan Meisenzahl, the Victoria’s Secret rep at UH followed the Student Life and Development registration process and attended an orientation and is, “allowed to promote on-campus as long as they do not violate the university nonsolicitation policy … and as long as they don’t use the UH logo without permission.”
The free panties hanging on the panty tree do not have UH logos on them, as far as anyone can tell.
If you’re in that age range or mind frame where the idea of skipping down to the quad to score some free underwear seems somehow untoward, consider how different things are on college campuses these days. There are now gender neutral bathrooms on many campuses that just say “Bathroom,” not “Men” or “Women.” UH is getting some gender neutral bathrooms next year. Valentine’s Day is Condom Day at UH; free condoms are handed out at the Campus Center and yes, there’s a condom tree. And generally, students are more open, at ease and empowered about issues of their own identity and sexuality. And, unlike previous generations, they like getting underwear for Christmas.
