Roosevelt graduate Clarissa Chun clinched the gold medal in the women’s freestyle 105.5-pound division at the Open Cup of Russia on Friday in Cheboksary.
Chun defeated Russia’s Valery Chepsarakova 4-1. The 2012 Olympic bronze medalist and 2008 World Champion is seeking to become the first U.S. woman to qualify for three Olympic wrestling squads.
Hawaii Hilo routs BYU-Hawaii
Kim Schmelz scored a game-high 19 points to lead the Hawaii Hilo women’s basketball team over BYU-Hawaii 72-61 on Saturday in Laie.
Lauren Hong and Sydney Mercer recorded 16 points each for the Vulcans (1-6, 1-1 PacWest). Jiashan Cui finished with 18 points for BYU-Hawaii (3-3, 0-1 PacWest).
The Seasiders out-rebounded the Vulcans 59-37, but Hawaii Hilo converted 39 percent of field goals compared to BYU-Hawaii’s 23.9 percent. The Seasiders also committed nine more turnovers (19-10).
McLachlin shares lead at Mauna Lani Open
Parker McLachlin posted a 4-under 68 to share the lead with Jake Grodzinsky at the Mauna Lani Resort Hawaii State Open on Saturday.
McLachlin, a Punahou graduate, and Grodzinsky finished at 137 after two rounds in the men’s open division. In the senior open division, David Ishii, Scott Simpson, Dave Eichelberger and Jeff Coston are tied at 141 for the lead.
Britney Yada took a seven-stroke lead in the women’s open division with a score of 136, followed by Mari Chun.
