Today’s recipes are really just assembly instructions. Study the pictures and you can pretty much figure out how to create these “Star Wars” sugar bombs.
Idea credit goes to Mr. Google, and you can find plenty more suggestions through a search for “Star Wars foods.” I picked items that did not require special molds or advanced cake-decorating skills. After all, most of your energy this week needs to be devoted to actually getting to a screening of “The Force Awakens.”
All the components can be purchased ready-made. I got the cupcakes — 10 for $7 — at Safeway, each covered in a mound of frosting, most of which I scraped off and tinted with food coloring to make the eyes, lips, etc.
As an alternative, use frosting tubes, sold at grocery stores in the baking aisle, available in black and white gels. Chocolate frosting sold in tubs can be subbed for black.
The only other thing you need is a steady hand.
Yoda
Green gumdrops are rolled out and cut into pieces to form Yoda’s facial features. Old-style gumdrops can be hard to find; check Longs Drugs for gummy spearmint leaves — not only are they the right color, they’re the right shape for Yoda’s ears. Pipe white and black frosting for eyes and lips.
Princess Leia
Chocolate-filled Oreos make her famous buns; frosting does the rest. Press the Oreos into the frosting at the sides. They stick quite well.
Chewbacca
A Twinkie provides a furry-looking base. Spread frosting into a strip for the ammo belt and use dots of frosting for the rest. Variations: Use a maple-bar doughnut as a bigger base, or a cookie as a smaller one. The latter, of course, would be a wookiee cookie.
Imperial stormtrooper
Use food-coloring markers or black frosting gel to draw the features onto a marshmallow. You could forsake the cupcake and simply spear each marshmallow on a stick. Line them up to create an army.
