Hawaii Pacific men’s tennis coach Henrik Bode was named the National Coach of the Year and the West Region Coach of the Year on Monday.
The award was presented at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s 2015 Coaches Convention.
Bode is entering his fifth season as the head coach of the Sharks. During his tenure, he has led HPU to an 81-11 record. HPU has gone undefeated (19-0) in each of the last two regular seasons. Last season, they reached the Division II championship match for the second straight year, losing to national champion Barry University.
The team enters the season ranked No. 2 in the country, boasting a 37-match win streak in the regular season.
Amateur card features father, son
Nick and Brayden Nunes out of Southland Maui Boxing Club will be featured on Friday’s USA Boxing-sanctioned match event at Palolo District Park gym.
According to organizer Bruce Kawano, it is believed to be the first time a father and son are on the same card in local boxing competition. Father Nick Nunes, 34, goes against Justine Ramos of Kawano/Kalakaua/Ohana B.C. at 155 pounds while son Brayden, 9, takes on Treyston Akana of Aiwohi Athletics/Five-0 B.C. at 65 pounds.
The main event pits Canada’s Eli Strada against Christopher Galavis of Kawano/Kalakaua/Ohana B.C. at 155 pounds. Some 13 bouts are scheduled beginning at 6:30 p.m.

HPU defeats BYUH in PacWest matchup
The Hawaii Pacific women’s basketball team topped BYU-Hawaii 57-42 to remain undefeated in the PacWest Conference.
Cece Pearl led HPU (5-4, 3-0 PacWest) with a game-high 15 points, and tacked on 10 rebounds. Breanna Mackenzie also had a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds, and Brianne Yasukochi totaled 14 points, six rebounds, four assists, and two steals. Valerie Nawahine led BYUH (3-4, 0-2 PacWest) with 13 points.
