Wired ribbon angels are quick to make and versatile.
“They can be put on the top of a present to dress it up or hung on the tree,” said Alden Nakano, designer at Flora-Dec. “It’s simple, easy and cheap.”
Nakano used just three supplies from Flora-Dec to create the angel: tinsel wire ($1.59 for 25 12-inch wires or $2.59 to $4.98 for a box of 100), 2- to 3-inch-wide wired ribbon (about $7 for 10 yards) and wood beads (25 wood beads for $4.99); no glue is required.
He recommends the project for kids 5 and older since the wire can be sharp. It takes about 10 to 15 minutes to make one angel.
Once completed, a hook can be added to make an ornament or glue a magnet or pin on the back of the angel.
Nakano says that crafting can help bring some balance during the hustle and bustle of the season. “It’s healthy for people to do some sort of crafting,” he said. “The worries of the world melt away, even if it’s only for a half-hour.”
Supplies
>> Wired ribbon, about 2 to 3 inches wide
>> 25-millimeter wooden beads
>> Tinsel wire
>> Optional: hook, magnet or pin
Instructions
For each angel, cut one 8-inch strip of ribbon (for skirt) and one 12-inch strip (for wings).
Cut one tinsel wire in half to form two 6-inch pieces.
To make the angel’s skirt, fold the 8-inch ribbon in half and pleat the ends of ribbon using an accordion fold.
Wrap one end of the 12-inch tinsel wire around the pleated end of the skirt. Place aside.
Fold the 12-inch ribbon so ends overlap forming a circle. Pleat in the middle to create a bow. Fold one 6-inch tinsel wire in half and twist around the center of the bow to hold the pleats and the ribbon ends in place.
Connect the two pieces by wrapping the excess wire on the wings around the skirt. The excess of the bottom wire of the skirt should stick up.
Accordion-fold the second 6-inch tinsel wire into half-inch segments, and insert into bead hole to fill. This will help secure the head.
Push the end of the 12-inch wire through the bead to create the angel head. Wrap the wire sticking out of the head of the angel around a pen to curl into a halo. Cut off excess wire.
