Outgoing Kamehameha football head coach Doug Cosbie will remember all the positive things he experienced in his short time with the Warriors.
On Wednesday, the school announced his resignation, effective Jan. 14.
“A family situation makes it necessary for us to be back in California,” Cosbie texted the Honolulu Star-Advertiser on Wednesday afternoon. “I also have a couple of business obligations that I cannot postpone past the first half of 2016.”
In a news release sent out by Kamehameha, Cosbie added, “It has been a privilege and blessing to have worked and coached at Kamehameha Schools. (Our family) will greatly miss the people we worked with, friendships we have formed over the last three years, and the great kids at Kamehameha.”
Cosbie, who was named the ILH coach of the year this season, went 19-9 overall, 11-7 in the ILH regular season and 1-2 in ILH playoff games without a state-tournament appearance. All nine of the Warriors’ losses under Cosbie were to either Punahou (the 2013 and ’14 league champion), against whom he was 0-5, or to ’15 ILH winner Saint Louis, against whom he was 2-4.
Cosbie played tight end for the Dallas Cowboys from 1979 to ’88 and he still ranks seventh in franchise history with 300 catches.
“Coach Doug brought a lot of knowledge with him from the NFL,” junior defensive end/linebacker Andrew Aleki said. “As a person, he is a good guy, a good Christian man, and he loves the game.”
Nakoa Pauole, another hoops player and a junior defensive lineman in football last season, said, “We all knew Doug knew the sport. He loves it. He loved playing it. He wanted to teach us his ways that he learned and he always wanted to win.”
A search to find Cosbie’s replacement has begun.
“Coach Cosbie is a champion of young men,” Warriors athletic director Glennie Adams said. “He emphasizes not only the quality of our young men’s play, but more importantly the quality of their character.”
