Skylar Nakata’s 12-foot baseline jumper beat the buzzer as No. 8-ranked ‘Iolani edged past No. 7 Kamehameha in an ILH girls basketball thriller at the Raiders’ gym.
Nakata’s shot was set up by Camy Aguinaldo, who caught a long inbounds pass from Tori Lynn Maeda, drove to the bucket and passed to Nakata. It was the most exhilarating 3.4 seconds of the season for ‘Iolani. By the time Aguinaldo passed the ball, time was very short for Nakata.
“It was drawn up for me to take the layup, but Skylar was open,” Aguinaldo said. “I drove and Kalina Obrey (of Kamehameha) came up to me, so I passed it to Sky. She practices that shot a lot.”
Nakata, an undersized forward-center who is a 3-point bomber, finished with a game-high 11 points to lead ‘Iolani. The Raiders improved to 1-2 in ILH play (3-6 overall) on a play drawn up by Coach Dean Young.
“It went exactly the way he drew it,” Nakata said. “Coach said, ‘Skylar, go on this side, go around’ (to the right baseline). I didn’t know how much time we had. I just put it up and it went in. Camy’s pass was so nice. I’m so glad she put her trust in me.”
Freshman Taylor Wu scored 11 points, including two key 3-pointers in a pivotal third quarter. Another freshman, Kawai Kahalehoe, added seven points off the bench. Aguinaldo finished with nine points and there assists.
Nakata’s clutch shot overshadowed a tremendous shot by Kamehameha’s Jewel Paaluhi-Caulk, who had swished a 22-foot trey from the top to give the visiting Warriors a 49-48 lead with four seconds to play.
“It felt like the game was done,” Paaluhi-Caulk said. “But Sky Nakata made the clutch shot. I give props to her.”
