Va‘e Malufau had 17 points and seven rebounds as the No. 3-ranked Punahou girls basketball team overpowered No. 7 Kamehameha 54-42 on Tuesday night at Hemmeter Fieldhouse.
Tyra Moe hustled for 10 points and eight rebounds, including six on the offensive glass, as the Buffanblu dominated most of the night in the paint. Punahou’s edge on the boards was 30-20, including 17 caroms on offense. They limited Kamehameha’s superb freshman, forward Kalina Obrey, to seven points, four rebounds and one block.
“Their physical pressure, talking as captains, that set the tone for our defense,” Punahou coach Liz Kam said of the 6-foot-1 Moe and 6-foot Malufau. “That turned into easy steals and points.”
Moe also had two blocks and a steal, while Malufau was active defensively with two steals.
All those extra possessions via offensive boards and steals by the home team made it nearly impossible for the visiting Warriors to get back in the game.
“They came out hungry from the get-go,” Kam said. “We’ve come out sluggish before and got into a hole. It had to start in warmups, being verbal, having active hands. Kamehameha is very athletic. Our guards did everything we asked (defensively).”
Punahou improved to 4-0 in the ILH (8-6 overall. Kamehameha dropped to 1-3 in league play (8-4 overall). Jewel Paaluhi-Caulk scored 10 points and Mikiala Maio had nine.
“We’ve got a game tomorrow,” Kamehameha coach Joseph Cho said, referring to a matchup with Maryknoll. “We’ve got to suck it up. I think Maryknoll is better (than Punahou). They’re deeper. When Punahou brings in their bench, they’re hurting.”
It was close early. Maio got hot late in the first quarter, hitting a corner 3 on an inbounds play, then a layup on a pass from Kiana Vierra to tie it at 7-all. Maio scored on another mid-range jumper, finishing the quarter with seven of her nine points, but Kamehameha never tied it again, and never led.
Punahou kept rotating reserves into the game, using some full-court pressure to go on an 8-0 run midway through the second quarter. Kamehameha committed five of its 10 turnovers in that period. Moe scored on an old-fashioned three-point play on a follow shot, Kamaile Kandiah drained a corner 3 and then delivered a pinpoint lob pass downcourt to speedy Lexie Taylor to give the Buffanblu a 23-14 lead.
Kamehameha tried to slow the tempo and Punahou obliged. Both teams ran flex offenses in the second quarter and Punahou led 25-16 at the half.
The Buffanblu got more activity from Taylor, a junior guard, to spark a third-quarter run. She had a steal that led to a putback by Malufau, who had just scored on a three-point play moments earlier. After Taylor swished a baseline jumper, Punahou owned a 40-23 lead.
Senior reserve guard Laycee Pasion scored four points and dished a nice pass to Rylee-Ann Kauahikaua to help Kamehameha cut the lead to 44-33 early in the fourth quarter. Punahou answered with an 8-0 run to extend the lead to 19 points.
Obrey took just two shots in the first half, but was much more aggressive against Punahou’s man defense in the third quarter, when she had five points and three boards.
“We’ve talked to her a lot about not deferring too much to the seniors and upperclassmen,” Cho said. “She’s probably as good as those two (Malufau and Moe) if you let her. By next year, she won’t be deferring any more.”
