Two pedestrians were in critical condition this week after being struck by vehicles in separate accidents on Farrington Highway in Waianae.
The first crash occurred at 10:49 p.m. Tuesday when a 57-year-old woman was walking on the road near the KFC fast food restaurant on Kaupuni Street, police said. The motorist, a 29-year-old woman, struck the older woman while driving east on Farrington. The driver was not injured. The pedestrian was taken by ambulance to a hospital in critical condition, police said.
About 1:50 p.m. Wednesday, an 84-year-old Waianae man crossing Farrington in front of Tamura Super Market outside of a crosswalk was hit by a Honda Civic driven by a 30-year-old woman heading toward Makaha. The man was taken to the Queen’s Medical Center in critical condition, police said.
Pake Salmon, who was driving near the scene on Farrington, said she saw the man’s bags fly in the air after he was hit.
She said she called police and rushed to the man’s side. His eyes were closed, but he was moving, and Salmon repeatedly told him that help was on the way. The man was bleeding from his head and mouth, Salmon said, adding that she held his hand so he wouldn’t feel alone.
Salmon said she hopes more can be done to increase pedestrian safety as a lot of older people jaywalk across the highway.
“I’m troubled,” she said. “We need to be more careful about driving out here.”
