Jan Tribler, Allan Sato, Lisa Shandy, the late Jim Hochberg and the 1998 Women’s NCAA Volleyball Championship team make up the fifth class of HPU Hall of Fame inductees, as announced by the Hawaii Pacific University athletics department on Wednesday. The S.H.A.R.X. Benefit will take place on Feb. 23 as the class will be inducted at a gala event at HPU’s Aloha Tower Marketplace.
Tribler (2000-02) was a three-time All-American men’s tennis player and finished 10th in the ITA National Singles rankings after his first year of competition.
Sato (1983-86) played baseball and ranks third in HPU history with 18 wins, fourth all-time with 218 career innings pitched and recorded two wins against University of Hawaii. He also spent 10 years as the head coach and helped the program transition from NAIA to NCAA Division II competition.
Shandy (1993-95) was named District 20 MVP as a sophomore pitcher for the softball program. She was a two-time All-American and holds multiple records for HPU including: career games pitched (66), career wins (49) and complete games in a season (23) and career (58). She is one of just two HPU pitchers to throw a perfect game.
Hochberg was a senior vice president of the university, who co-founded HPU athletics in 1978 with its first men’s basketball team. He built a 25-year career in the United States Army and earned two Bronze Stars for bravery under fire. He died in 2011.
The 1998 Women’s Volleyball team won the NCAA Division II title, finishing that year with a 31-5 record. All five losses came to BYU-Hawaii, but the Sea Warriors avenged those losses with a five-set victory over the Seasiders in the regional tournament. HPU beat North Dakota State in four sets to win the national championship for the first time since the program moved into the NCAA.
