BYU-Hawaii men beat Fresno Pacific

Scott Friel scored 17 points and Ian Harward added 16 points and 15 rebounds as the Brigham Young-Hawaii men’s basketball team beat Fresno Pacific 86-76 on Thursday in Fresno, Calif.

Cory Lange and Tanner Nelson both added 14 points for the Seasiders (8-3, 5-1 PacWest).

Madison Higgins had 22 points and Roger Paul added 20 for the Sunbirds (8-5, 3-3).

The Vulcans dropped to 0-9 and 0-5 PacWest.

HPU women topple Notre Dame de Namur

Breanna Mackenzie had 19 points and nine rebounds and Aminata Cole finished with 15 points and 12 rebounds as the Hawaii Pacific women’s basketball team beat Notre Dame de Namur 59-45 on Thursday in Belmont, Calif.

The Sharks, who have won six consecutive games, improved to 8-4 and 5-0 in the PacWest.

Megan Crenshaw scored 16 points and Farrington graduate Kirsten Liana had 13 for the Argonauts (1-12, 0-5).

Maeda advances to semifinals in Portugal

Hawaii’s Mahina Maeda beat Portugal’s Camilla Kemp on Thursday to advance to the semifinals of the Ericeira World Junior Championships in 2- to 3-foot surf at Praia dos Pescadores in Ericeira, Portugal.

Maeda, the reigning Women’s World Junior champion, beat Kemp 15.83 to 11.33.

Maeda will face Portugal’s Teresa Bonvalot in today’s semifinals. Bonvalot beat Hawaii’s Brissa Hennessy 14.50 to 13.26 in the quarterfinals.

Hawaii’s Dax McGill won her third-round heat, but was eliminated by Australia’s Holly Wawn 17.53 to 16.10 in the quarterfinals.
