UH’s Gismervik sweeps diving invitational
University of Hawaii senior Amund Gismervik completed a two-day sweep at the Wally Nakamoto Hawaii Diving Invitational with a win in the men’s 3-meter springboard on Friday at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex.
Gismervik won the 1-meter and platform events on Thursday and finished ahead of UH teammate Johan Sandell for the 3-meter title on Friday. Gismervik posted a score of 383.30, followed by Sandell’s 363.85.
Harvard’s Jing Leung won the women’s platform title with a score of 280.85. Aimee Harrison was UH’s top finisher in sixth place at 223.65. Nevada’s Shuangxue Zheng won the women’s 1-meter with a score of 329.00 with Harrison placing third at 292.10.
Harrison also picked up a silver in the women’s 3-meter on Thursday, with teammate Lauren Hall finishing fourth.
The inaugural meet was named in honor of the late Wally Nakamoto, who coached the UH diving teams for 30 years.
David advances in World Junior surfing
North Shore native Kalani David advanced to the third round of the 2016 Men’s Ericeira World Junior surfing championships in Ericeira, Portugal, on Friday.
David’s second-round score of 14.07 ousted Japan’s Momoto Tsuzuki, who had a score of 11.80. In other second-round action, Seth Moniz of Honolulu was eliminated by Australia’s Harry Bryant by a score of 14.53-13.00.
