It was a story of two Coles, and for a second time in a row, Punahou sent Kamehameha home with an overtime loss.
Jack-Eli Tufono scored 12 points, including three in overtime, as No. 1-ranked Punahou outlasted No. 6 Kamehameha 62-60 in a thriller at Hemmeter Fieldhouse.
Sophomore guard Cole Arceneaux scored 12 points, including two big free throws late in the extra period, and reserve forward Cole Mausolf scored seven points, including a clutch 3-pointer in OT.
Arceneaux has been entrenched as a prime-time contributor, but Mausolf stepped up in the absence of senior Jared Lum, who injured a meniscus at practice on Friday.
“We might not get Jared back,” Punahou coach Darren Matsuda said of one of the team’s three seniors. “He’s the heart and soul of our team. Mausolf is with our second group. He has a nice jump shot and makes nice decisions.”
Punahou improved to 1-1 in the rugged Interscholastic League of Honolulu (16-3 overall), where there might not be any such thing as an upset this season, not after a wild Saturday night. Kamehameha, which lost to ‘Iolani on Wednesday, slipped to 0-2 (7-8 overall).
“I’m disgusted. Our guys are working so hard, and as a coach you want them to get that reward,” Kamehameha coach Greg Tacon said. “All our coaches and seniors have got to stay together. We’re doing well, but this is a very tough ILH.”
Kamehameha shot 7-for-16 from 3-point range and limited Punahou to 4-for-19 shooting from deep.
Tufono, who grabbed a team-high six rebounds, scored the first bucket in overtime, on a low-post move. Kamehameha got a 3-point shot from sophomore Kameren Victorino-Kato for a 53-52 lead, but Mausolf led a fast break and fed Chris Kobayashi (11 points) for a go-ahead layup with 1:52 left.
Mausolf, a lanky 6-foot-4 sophomore, then drained a wing 3 on a pass from Zayne Chong to extend the lead to 57-53.
The Warriors pulled within 58-56 on a corner 3 by Saint Gelacio with 46 seconds to play, but Arceneaux knocked down two foul shots with 36.2 ticks left. He missed two more foul shots with 23.5 seconds remaining, but Kamehameha was ice cold from the perimeter.
Hunter Hosoda then hit two free throws with 12.2 seconds left to stretch Punahou’s lead to 62-56.
Kobe Young got a steal and hit a 3 with two seconds left to bring the Warriors within two points, but the clock ran out.
Young led Kamehameha with 13 points and grabbed five boards. Jayden Zarriello and Victorino-Kato tallied 10 points each.
The Warriors have been close recently. A little more than one week ago, they pushed the Buffanblu to overtime in the semifinal round of the Punahou Invitational before losing.
This time, there were nine lead changes in the second half. It took three free throws by the senior Zarriello, who was fouled while shooting a 3-pointer from the top with five-tenths of a second left in regulation, to tie the contest at 50 and force overtime.
