It was a grind of a game for a team facing duress, but an ailing Captain bailed the Kalaheo Mustangs out.
Captain Whitlock scored 22 points and Alex Layi had 23 point and 12 rebounds as No. 9 Kalaheo rallied for a 64-37 runaway win over Roosevelt on Thursday night at the Rough Riders’ gym.
Kalaheo improved to 6-0 in OIA East play (17-4 overall) despite the loss of starting forward Jonah Howard. The transfer from McKinley suffered a fracture in his right foot during practice on Monday and is done for the season, coach Rob Pardini said.
“Captain was sick all day yesterday (Wednesday),” Pardini said of the junior, who also had seven boards and four assists.
Whitlock, battling a stomach ailment, had one of his team’s three technical fouls.
“He lost a little bit of his composure,” Pardini said.
Layi, who transferred to Kalaheo from Campbell two years ago, came up huge on a night when Roosevelt’s stingy zone defense had the visitors baffled at times. For Layi, this was potentially a breakout game.
“My shots weren’t dropping for me early on in the season,” he said. “It was a team thing. We rallied around each other like Coach said to.”
Jared Elwin and Micah Visoria led Roosevelt (2-4) with eight points each. The Rough Riders had Kalaheo’s 2-2-1 zone press and halfcourt man defense solved early on, rolling to a 16-11 lead early in the second quarter after Visoria drove to the hoop for a bucket.
From there, it was a torrent of turnovers by the home team. Roosevelt committed eight of them in the second quarter as Kalaheo took a 21-18 lead into the break. The second quarter featured two technical fouls, one on each team, as the mood turned testy and didn’t improve at all.
Kalaheo then went on a 14-0 run to open the second half. Whitlock had just five points in the first half, but scored seven in the third quarter. Layi also came on strong after intermission, scoring nine points in the third as the Mustangs opened a 41-21 lead late in the quarter. Roosevelt shot 2-for-12 during the second and third quarters combined.
Kalaheo still had Layi and Whitlock in the game late, partly because of Howard’s absence. Senior guard Kekai Smith, who injured a meniscus during preseason, is due back next week. Pardini chose to keep Whitlock, his best ball handler, in the game to the finish.
Kalaheo was still pressing with two minutes to play, and after a reserve player went for a layup and was fouled with one second to go, Roosevelt coach Steve Hathaway had seen enough. He sent his team to the locker room without shaking hands after the buzzer, though he and his staff stayed on the floor for the handshakes. It was a move to keep the peace.
“We beat ourselves more than anything else tonight. The refs told me at halftime they’d call it tight because it was chippy,” Hathaway said. “Our guys came out of halftime flat. That’s the eighth or ninth time we’ve lost when we were close or leading at the half.”
