A water main break Friday closed the Honolulu District Court building, Kauikeaouli Hale, in downtown Honolulu.
Hearings and trials canceled because of the closure are being rescheduled, and deadlines for court filings are extended until the close of business Tuesday, by order of the chief justice.
The building closed at 10:45 a.m. after maintenance crews shut off all water.
Repairs are underway.
The closure is limited to courts and programs at Kauikeaouli Hale, including the Honolulu District Courts and selected Family and Circuit Court trial divisions and administrative offices.
Kauikeaouli Hale is expected to reopen for business Tuesday.
Waipio Valley remains closed due to dengue
Waipio Valley on the Hamakua Coast remained closed to visitors due to concerns about the dengue virus, as the number of people hit with the illness crept higher on Hawaii island.
Five new cases reported Friday bring the total to 223 confirmed cases. Of that total, 22 visitors have contracted the mosquito-borne disease, and 42 are children.
Waipio Valley Access Road and the valley itself were closed Wednesday until further notice to visitors. Access is limited to Waipio Valley residents. Waipio, on the northeast area of Hawaii island, is the first location closed on the island’s east side due to the dengue outbreak.
Milolii Beach Park and Hookena Beach Park on the Kona Coast were closed. Milolii Beach Park remains closed.
Man convicted in sex assault of 6-year-old
A Kauai Circuit Court jury on Friday found a 39-year-old Kekaha man guilty of sexually assaulting a 6-year-old girl.
Steven Westerman is scheduled to be sentenced April 28 on five counts of first-degree sexual assault stemming from multiple acts of assault from 1995 through 1997, police said.
The verdict was made in Westerman’s retrial held this week.
The first trial was held in May 2014 after he was charged in 2012. A judge declared a mistrial due to lack of direct witnesses and other evidence, according to The Garden Island newspaper.
The Garden Island said Westerman is the son of Kauai Fire Chief Robert Westerman.
Attorney Craig De Costa, who is representing Steven Westerman, declined to comment because there may be motions filed in the case.
