A man was found dead inside a vehicle that went over a cliff on Maui after authorities used GPS tracking to locate the accident site off Kahekili Highway on Wednesday morning.
Officials said the vehicle was found in a ravine about 200 feet below the highway, just north of the south entrance to Kaukini Loop. Firefighters and police began the search for the site of a possible vehicle accident at 7:44 a.m. after a company that manages the GPS tracking in the vehicle called emergency dispatchers. Police said GPS coordinates were obtained from the vehicle’s onboard location tracker.
The Maui County Fire Department’s Air 1 helicopter was dispatched to search the thick vegetation near where the vehicle was believed to have gone off the roadway and over a cliff. The man was found dead inside. Crews recovered the body and transferred him to a landing zone in a nearby pasture.
Aliamanu victim was stabbed in the neck
A 65-year-old woman killed in Aliamanu on Monday died of stab wounds and cuts to the neck, the Honolulu Medical Examiner’s Office said Wednesday.
The office ruled Melita Fajotina’s death a homicide, and police identified her husband as a suspect.
Police said officers found Fajotina unresponsive at a Wanaka Street home about 5:35 a.m. Monday. She died at the scene. Her husband, Isagani Fajotina, was taken to the Queen’s Medical Center in critical condition with a self-inflicted stab wound. He later had surgery there.
A second woman, 52, also suffered minor injuries.
Police arrested Isagani Fajotina on suspicion of second-degree murder and second-degree attempted murder and classified the case as a murder and an attempted suicide. He was later released, pending investigation.
Fajotina remained hospitalized at Queen’s on Wednesday.
