It was one of those plays you dream about. Ten, nine, eight … .
Kailua coach Wally Marciel called a timeout with 10 seconds to go, tied 52-all at home against rival Kalaheo, a team the Surfriders haven’t beaten in a long, long time.
The inbounds pass went to Noah Ah Yat just over the halfcourt stripe. He dribbled past a few defenders, who were being careful not to foul in such a crucial situation. The defense got a bit tighter in the lane, where Ah Yat drove in for a layup and what turned out to be a 54-52 victory.
The game wasn’t over yet. Ah Yat’s shot went through with four seconds showing, but only three seconds remained when the clock was stopped. Kalaheo had one more chance. A long inbounds pass from the Mustangs’ own baseline went to Kekai Smith, who was playing in his first game after missing time with a knee injury. Smith, a key member of last season’s Division I state champion Mustangs, smartly drove to the 3-point line and let a shot go with one second left that bounced off the rim.
“At the end of the game, it came down to senior leadership,” Marciel said. “We wanted the ball in one of the seniors hands. Noah got the ball, penetrated and hit a nice shot. In the huddle, we said, ‘It’s time to turn the corner. Let’s get these guys. It’s been forever since Kailua beat Kalaheo.’ ”
The loss dropped the No. 9 Mustangs (7-1) from the unbeaten ranks, but they remained tied at the top of the Oahu Interscholastic Association East with Kaiser. Kailua improved to 4-4.
The lead changed hands eight times, and the Surfriders never trailed after Ah Yat hit two free throws and Christian Mejia tipped in a shot by Zachary Marrotte for a 52-49 lead.
But on its next trip down the court, Kalaheo’s Captain Whitlock hit one of his five 3-pointers for the 52-all tie.
“We lost focus at the end,” said Whitlock, who finished with a game-high 27 points. “We let them play harder than us at the end, and it ended up costing us. I think this tight loss is going to help us. We’ve got Kaiser coming up soon.”
Mejia was a wrecking ball of a force for the Surfriders. He had 23 points and dominated inside, and he even had a dunk on a pass from Ah Yat to cut a deficit to one point, 32-31, early in the third quarter.
“It feels amazing (to beat Kalaheo),” Mejia said. “We couldn’t have done it without everyone being together.”
Kalaheo’s Alex Layi scored 15 points in the loss and matched up as much as he could against Mejia on defense.
“He gives up a couple of inches and some weight to Christian (6 feet 4), who is a big boy,” Mustangs coach Rob Pardini said. “And he did a good job. At this point in the season, we will benefit from tight games, wins or losses. It could have gone either way. We had a chance to put them away, but Kailua finished nicely.”
The Surfriders’ Ah Yat had 14 points and Hano Kohatsu added 11.
Roosevelt 62, No. 1 Kaiser 58, OT
Nayton Koki scored a game-high 15 points and pulled down 12 rebounds to lead the Rough Riders in an overtime upset victory over the top-ranked Cougars.
A missed shot by Roosevelt at the end of regulation forced overtime. With three seconds remaining in extra session and Roosevelt ahead 60-58, Kaiser was fouled but couldn’t make either of the two free throws. The Rough Riders grabbed the rebound and iced the game with two made free throws.
